Who We Are

Our vision is a Kansas full of thriving, inclusive, and just communities. Kansas Appleseed was founded in 1999 by Kansas attorneys who saw a need for organized policy advocacy on issues of poverty and exclusion. Those attorneys founded Kansas Appleseed as a member of the Appleseed Network, a family of 18 separately incorporated justice centers across the United States and in Mexico City dedicated to securing justice and equality for all. The central theme that united the first Appleseed generation was the notion that law is not just something to restrain abuses, but rather is an opportunity to give people the chance to fulfill their potential in life.

What We Do

We research the details of a problem, its root causes, and workable solutions; we support the public’s voice in policy decisions through community organizing and grassroots engagement; and we shepherd policy solutions through the decision-making process at the state and local level. We focus especially on issues affecting kids, voting rights, and the fair administration of justice.
