Volunteer: Garden Volunteer- Audio-Reader Sensory GardenSeeking volunteers to help out in the sensory garden. We have regular garden shared work times on Thursdays (March to October) from 9:30 to 11:30. Once a volunteer completes the application https://reader.ku.edu/volunteer-application as well as out orientation, volunteers can select hours that work for them to weed, water, sweep, trim and enjoying. Hours are flexible, folks with some gardening background helpful; tasks include physical labor and exposure to the outdoors while weeding, planting, sweeping, trimming and enjoying the garden. Complete a volunteer application at reader.ku.edu and you will get an email regarding volunteer orientation. Purpose of the Audio-Reader Sensory GardenThe concept of a sensory garden is unique: to provide an outdoor environment that stimulates a variety of senses, making the garden particularly accessible to individuals with visual impairments and other disabilities. Plantings include those that are very fragrant or have interesting textures. Plants are labeled with special markers that identify the plant in Braille and in print. How to experience a sensory gardenWhen you stroll through the Audio-Reader Sensory Garden, you are encouraged to explore the garden with your fingers, your nose, and your ears — to touch, feel, smell and listen. This is a hands-on garden and visitors are encouraged to use several of their senses in order to enjoy all of the delights that the garden has to offer. Children, adults, and seniors — sighted and sight-impaired — revel in the opportunity to experience this unique garden. In order to activate the fragrance of a plant, you may need to gently rub the leaf between your fingers. This also allows you to experience the unique texture of each plant. Wind chimes, a bubbling rock fountain, song birds, the chiming of the nearby Campanile, and even the sound of the KU marching band wafting from the nearby football stadium provide wonderful sounds to enjoy. Take a moment to sit on one of the garden benches and enjoy the distinctive sounds of the garden. Agency: Audio-Reader Seeking volunteers to help out in the sensory garden. Volunteer: Routine HousekeepingDue to our high levels of certification, it is important for us to keep certain communal areas tidy. Kitchens, breakrooms, and other spaces need to be cleaned regularly. Recycling needs to be taken out, counters need to be wiped down, and floors need to be swept. None of the spaces get very dirty, but the cleaning needs to be frequent, so this is a volunteer opportunity that would involve doing a quick tidying throughout our spaces on a weekly basis. Because we provide confidential services a volunteer would need to take a virtual HIPAA training and fill out some paperwork. Volunteer: Silverbackks Board MemberSilverbackks is looking for qualified board members to join our troop! We are recruiting 7 to 10 new board members to lead our organization beginning January 2025. Read on for more about Silverbackks!Who We Are
Silverbackks is a 501(c)(3) organization that serves the Topeka community and we are looking for passionate, decisive, innovative leaders to serve on our board of directors. Silverbackks is a grassroots volunteer organization formed in July 2011 and is run by volunteers. The organization does not own any property and does not currently have any employees. We are a troop of volunteers standing with those who need help standing on their own. The leadership of a strong board of directors is needed to make the policy decisions that will take Silverbackks into the future. What We DoSilverbackks is as much about building community as it is about feeding and caring for those in need in Topeka. Encouraging community among those we serve is an important outcome of Silverbackks—many of those we serve often feel isolated and without hope. Building community among our volunteers and providing volunteers with opportunities to learn, serve, and grow enhances the effectiveness of our efforts. Since its founding, an unpaid operations manager has overseen and handled all of the administrative responsibilities of the organization. This individual has a high-level full time career and has transitioned out of the role of operations manager. The current board is creating a plan to hire a part-time staff position to take on these responsibilities. Current Programs: SilverSundays – Every Sunday at 11:30 am a meal is served to anyone who comes to 408 SW Jackson. Anyone who is hungry is fed—there is no screening for financial need, church affiliation or previous use of services. A hot meal is served the first Sunday of each month and sack lunches are provided the rest of the month. In 2017 we served 10,849 meals—an average of 208 per week.SilverSuppers – Evening meals are provided at Central Park, Garfield, and Hillcrest Community Centers Monday to Thursday to children up to age 18. This program, in partnership with Shawnee County Parks & Rec, provided 7,750 meals during 2017.SilverBags – SilverBags offers hygiene items for guests at our SilverSunday lunch service on the third Sunday of every month.SilverSuccess – In partnership with USD 501, SilverSuccess is a personal hygiene distribution program, providing full-sized hygiene products to school-aged children who are homeless or at a high risk of homelessness. We stock a supply of hygiene items at the USD 501 administration building and school social workers can access these supplies as they identify need among children in the school district. The retail cost of products provided during 2017 was $7000.More information on Silverbackks programs can be found at www. silverbackks.org. How Silverbackks is FundedSilverbackks receives goods and tangible items donated by the community. including hygiene products, food and food service items for our feeding programs, and warmth items such as hats and gloves. A full list of tangible items we accept on donation can be found at www.silverbackks.org/wish-lists/. In the event these items are not donated to the extent needed to serve our clients, monetary donations are used. People are generally quite pleased to donate money to a 100% volunteer run organization. It feels good to have your money used for direct services, rather than paying for staff and buildings. Silverbackks has been fortunate to receive generous financial support from the community and all programs are currently well-funded. In the future the organization will need to engage in fundraising to support a part-time staff position to fulfill the administrative responsibilities necessary to operate Silverbackks programs. Organizations that have supported Silverbackks through either monetary or in-kind donations include the Amazon Smiles reward program, the Kroger Foods reward program, FHLBank Topeka, UPS, Topeka Community Foundation (through the Topeka Gives matching program), Davita, Stormont Vail, Advisors Excel, and various other churches and organizations. What We’re Looking For in Board Members:Effective board members need to be involved in our programs as volunteers themselves. Choosing to occasionally prepare meals, hand out hygiene products, and serve meals in the evening and Sundays keeps the board in tune with how our programs function and familiarizes board members with the people we serve. In addition to participating in board meetings, board members are expected to volunteer from two to five hours each quarter of the year. Champions for Silverbackks – We’re looking for cheerleaders, speakers, and connectors who will enthusiastically represent the organization to attract volunteers, donations of goods, and funding. Our board members are “chief volunteer recruiters” –we want you to invite your friends and associates to volunteer! Strategic Thinkers and Planners – Silverbackks needs thoughtful and experienced leadership to continue serving our community’s needs. We’re looking for people with non-profit board strengths including financial management skills, strategic thinking/planning, the ability to work as a team to advance the mission of Silverbackks, effective communicators, and a passion for serving those in need in our community. Fundraising – The part-time administrative position will need to be funded and the board will be responsible for fundraising to cover these expenses on an annual basis. We are looking for 7 to 10 board members. Board terms are three years and board meetings are held quarterly. Interested in joining us to LEAD. HELP. BUILD. PROTECT? Please contact Isabel Huckins at (785) 267-2963 with questions. Agency: Silverbackks Silverbackks is looking for qualified board members to join our troop! Agency: Silverbackks Opportunity Type: Volunteer Date: Is Ongoing Zip Code: 66606 Allow Groups: No |

Volunteer: Hospice Patient Companion and/or Respite for CaregiverProvide companionship to hospice patients and/or a break (respite) for their caregivers by providing volunteer visits in the client's home or a care facility. Volunteer support requested once a week for a couple hours. There are breaks between new patient placements. You will not volunteer continuously for a year. As a hospice patient companion volunteer, you would agree to volunteer a full year (or one full school year). Hospice Volunteers can be called on to serve as patient companion in-home settings or local nursing facilities. · In a home setting volunteers provide respite to caregiver and/or patient companionship 2 hours, once a week. Respite for caregivers allows them time to get things done around the house or complete errands/appointments outside the home. You will often be left alone for up to 2 hours with in-home patients and will be given information on patient needs. Volunteers will not be expected to provide skills-based/hands-on care. · · Hospice training provided/required. · Once you are placed with a patient/family you will provide regular, once weekly respites until the patient passes or your service is no longer needed. Placements can last only day/s or several months depending on the progression of the illness. · If you volunteer in a nursing facility you will visit one (or more) of our VNA hospice patients s in need of a companionship. These visits are generally shorter and typically include patients of advanced age with some dementias or patients who are sleeping more, in decline and families requesting calm presence. · There is no ‘Hospice House’ located in Lawrence, KS so volunteer visits occur in patient homes or facilities. *You will need to have a car/transportation. It’s best if you have availability that would allow you to: · Make visits during the weekday, once weekly for approximately 2 hours (until patient passes or service no longer needed. These placement timelines differ from weeks to months.) · Make visits during the late morning or early afternoon. (common examples: 10am – noon or 2-4pm ) · Only available weekends? Placements are available during weekend hours as a friendly visitor for hospice patients in facility care. However, In-Home volunteer requests for regular volunteer support on weekends is less common. Please consider these limitations regarding volunteer requests if you are only available weekends. · One time or short-term requests happen on occasion for caregivers needing to attend appointments or in need of support for short period of time. · We also need volunteers willing to sit ‘vigil’ for patients who are actively dying. You will sit with patients who will mostly be unresponsive or in need of reassurance/presence. If you are also interested in late night vigil opportunities, please let me know. Referrals for Hospice volunteers are requested of me by the patient’s Hospice social worker. Since volunteer placements are variable depending on referrals and volunteer availability, I’m not able to guarantee you will volunteer regularly every month. It just depends on the number of referrals and your ability to accept those placement requests. The longer you are able to volunteer, the more experiences and opportunities you will have to serve a variety of patients/families. If you can be flexible regarding these changing commitments but still have availability, we can call on that would be best. Of course, a compassionate heart, ability to listen as well as a sense of humor and open mind will be of great benefit in this work.
