Volunteer: Garden Volunteer- Audio-Reader Sensory GardenSeeking volunteers to help out in the sensory garden. We have regular garden shared work times on Thursdays (March to October) from 9:30 to 11:30. Once a volunteer completes the application https://reader.ku.edu/volunteer-application as well as out orientation, volunteers can select hours that work for them to weed, water, sweep, trim and enjoying. Hours are flexible, folks with some gardening background helpful; tasks include physical labor and exposure to the outdoors while weeding, planting, sweeping, trimming and enjoying the garden. Complete a volunteer application at reader.ku.edu and you will get an email regarding volunteer orientation. Purpose of the Audio-Reader Sensory GardenThe concept of a sensory garden is unique: to provide an outdoor environment that stimulates a variety of senses, making the garden particularly accessible to individuals with visual impairments and other disabilities. Plantings include those that are very fragrant or have interesting textures. Plants are labeled with special markers that identify the plant in Braille and in print. How to experience a sensory gardenWhen you stroll through the Audio-Reader Sensory Garden, you are encouraged to explore the garden with your fingers, your nose, and your ears — to touch, feel, smell and listen. This is a hands-on garden and visitors are encouraged to use several of their senses in order to enjoy all of the delights that the garden has to offer. Children, adults, and seniors — sighted and sight-impaired — revel in the opportunity to experience this unique garden. In order to activate the fragrance of a plant, you may need to gently rub the leaf between your fingers. This also allows you to experience the unique texture of each plant. Wind chimes, a bubbling rock fountain, song birds, the chiming of the nearby Campanile, and even the sound of the KU marching band wafting from the nearby football stadium provide wonderful sounds to enjoy. Take a moment to sit on one of the garden benches and enjoy the distinctive sounds of the garden. Agency: Audio-Reader Seeking volunteers to help out in the sensory garden. Volunteer: Saturday Sandwich Maker for Sack Lunches
Make a difference in the neighborhood! Consider joining our Sandwich Sack preparation teams on Saturday mornings, from 8-11:30, one Saturday a month. Or, if you prefer to be a substitute worker for a team, that would be helpful as well. This is a great opportunity for students looking for community service hours.
Grace Cathedral serves an average of 950 sack lunches each month to our community neighbors. Each sack consists of 2 peanut butter & jelly sandwiches, a bag of chips and 2 cookies. So, that's an average of 1900 sandwiches each month (for months with 4 Saturdays).
We have teams of volunteers who work one Saturday each month to prepare these sack lunches. All ingredients are provided by the church. We are looking for a few eager volunteers to supplement our teams.

Volunteer: Summer Substitute and/or Weekly Delivery Volunteers at Lawrence Meals on WheelsSummer Volunteers are needed. Please give us a call if you can help! We need volunteers all year but we are very flexible and can work around seasonal schedules when possible. Types of drivers are needed: What happens when I decide to volunteer? Each day, Lawrence Meals On Wheels delivers approximately 150+ meals. This enormous task would not be possible without our number one resource – Volunteers. Over 125 volunteers each week are utilized to serve our clients. Volunteers pick up meals between 10:30 – 11:30 at MOW, 2121 Kasold, and then deliver to between 4 -8 clients. The delivery bags are then returned to MOW. The entire process takes an hour or less and can easily be done over your lunch hour. We can be very flexible if you need to run errands afterwards or return the bags the next morning - just let us know and we will work it out. Volunteers initially train with a staff member and then ride along on a route prior to driving their own. We provide route sheets, with detailed maps and written directions. Staff is always available to answer any questions and assist as needed. All of our routes take an hour or less. We do our best to make sure that the delivery routes are as direct and concise as possible. A valid driver’s license and proof of current insurance are required. Our volunteers range in age from 5 to 90. We have parents who drive with their children, executives who drive on their lunch hour, as well as KU students and retired individuals who drive. We are flexible and can work with your schedule, i.e. if you are going to be out of town, can only help over the holidays and/or during the summer, etc. We can not accept anyone under 18 as a volunteer driver unless they are accompanied by a parent. Other Volunteer Opportunities: Event/Fundraising volunteers – Throughout the year, Lawrence Meals On Wheels has several fundraisers, from letter campaigns to our annual Event, which require a lot of manpower, time and energy to be successful. We also have seasonal events that require additional support. We will post these opportunities as they arise. Agency: Lawrence Meals On Wheels Summer Volunteers are needed. Volunteer: Routine HousekeepingDue to our high levels of certification, it is important for us to keep certain communal areas tidy. Kitchens, breakrooms, and other spaces need to be cleaned regularly. Recycling needs to be taken out, counters need to be wiped down, and floors need to be swept. Volunteer: Substitute and/or Weekly Delivery Volunteers at Lawrence Meals on WheelsTypes of drivers are needed: What happens when I decide to volunteer? Volunteer: Silverbackks Board MemberSilverbackks is looking for qualified board members to join our troop! We are recruiting 7 to 10 new board members to lead our organization beginning January 2025. Read on for more about Silverbackks!Who We Are
Silverbackks is a 501(c)(3) organization that serves the Topeka community and we are looking for passionate, decisive, innovative leaders to serve on our board of directors. Silverbackks is a grassroots volunteer organization formed in July 2011 and is run by volunteers. The organization does not own any property and does not currently have any employees. We are a troop of volunteers standing with those who need help standing on their own. The leadership of a strong board of directors is needed to make the policy decisions that will take Silverbackks into the future. What We DoSilverbackks is as much about building community as it is about feeding and caring for those in need in Topeka. Encouraging community among those we serve is an important outcome of Silverbackks—many of those we serve often feel isolated and without hope. Building community among our volunteers and providing volunteers with opportunities to learn, serve, and grow enhances the effectiveness of our efforts. Since its founding, an unpaid operations manager has overseen and handled all of the administrative responsibilities of the organization. This individual has a high-level full time career and has transitioned out of the role of operations manager. The current board is creating a plan to hire a part-time staff position to take on these responsibilities. Current Programs: SilverSundays – Every Sunday at 11:30 am a meal is served to anyone who comes to 408 SW Jackson. Anyone who is hungry is fed—there is no screening for financial need, church affiliation or previous use of services. A hot meal is served the first Sunday of each month and sack lunches are provided the rest of the month. In 2017 we served 10,849 meals—an average of 208 per week.SilverSuppers – Evening meals are provided at Central Park, Garfield, and Hillcrest Community Centers Monday to Thursday to children up to age 18. This program, in partnership with Shawnee County Parks & Rec, provided 7,750 meals during 2017.SilverBags – SilverBags offers hygiene items for guests at our SilverSunday lunch service on the third Sunday of every month.SilverSuccess – In partnership with USD 501, SilverSuccess is a personal hygiene distribution program, providing full-sized hygiene products to school-aged children who are homeless or at a high risk of homelessness. We stock a supply of hygiene items at the USD 501 administration building and school social workers can access these supplies as they identify need among children in the school district. The retail cost of products provided during 2017 was $7000.More information on Silverbackks programs can be found at www. silverbackks.org. How Silverbackks is FundedSilverbackks receives goods and tangible items donated by the community. including hygiene products, food and food service items for our feeding programs, and warmth items such as hats and gloves. A full list of tangible items we accept on donation can be found at www.silverbackks.org/wish-lists/. In the event these items are not donated to the extent needed to serve our clients, monetary donations are used. People are generally quite pleased to donate money to a 100% volunteer run organization. It feels good to have your money used for direct services, rather than paying for staff and buildings. Silverbackks has been fortunate to receive generous financial support from the community and all programs are currently well-funded. In the future the organization will need to engage in fundraising to support a part-time staff position to fulfill the administrative responsibilities necessary to operate Silverbackks programs. Organizations that have supported Silverbackks through either monetary or in-kind donations include the Amazon Smiles reward program, the Kroger Foods reward program, FHLBank Topeka, UPS, Topeka Community Foundation (through the Topeka Gives matching program), Davita, Stormont Vail, Advisors Excel, and various other churches and organizations. What We’re Looking For in Board Members:Effective board members need to be involved in our programs as volunteers themselves. Choosing to occasionally prepare meals, hand out hygiene products, and serve meals in the evening and Sundays keeps the board in tune with how our programs function and familiarizes board members with the people we serve. In addition to participating in board meetings, board members are expected to volunteer from two to five hours each quarter of the year. Champions for Silverbackks – We’re looking for cheerleaders, speakers, and connectors who will enthusiastically represent the organization to attract volunteers, donations of goods, and funding. Our board members are “chief volunteer recruiters” –we want you to invite your friends and associates to volunteer! Strategic Thinkers and Planners – Silverbackks needs thoughtful and experienced leadership to continue serving our community’s needs. We’re looking for people with non-profit board strengths including financial management skills, strategic thinking/planning, the ability to work as a team to advance the mission of Silverbackks, effective communicators, and a passion for serving those in need in our community. Fundraising – The part-time administrative position will need to be funded and the board will be responsible for fundraising to cover these expenses on an annual basis. We are looking for 7 to 10 board members. Board terms are three years and board meetings are held quarterly. Interested in joining us to LEAD. HELP. BUILD. PROTECT? Please contact Isabel Huckins at (785) 267-2963 with questions. Agency: Silverbackks Silverbackks is looking for qualified board members to join our troop! Volunteer: Backstage Volunteering OpportunitiesWhen you see a show at Topeka Civic Theatre, you are seeing the result of countless volunteer hours. From the people who take you to your seat to those who paint the sets, the actors on our stage to the stage managers running the show; volunteers make Topeka Civic Theatre a place where theatre thrives. Topeka Civic Theatre's Behind-the-Scenes volunteers may never be in the spotlight, but their work behind-the-scenes ensures Topeka Civic Theatre continues to produce the best and most innovative theatre possible. With Backstage Crew, Painters, Builders, Properties Coordinators and Strike Force Crew, there is a behind the scenes volunteer opportunity to fit your talents. Behind-the-Scenes Volunteers include: Backstage Crew, Set Construction, Scene Painting, Properties Coordinator and Strike Force Crew. Backstage Crew: Volunteers will join us for our technical rehearsals through the run of out show to be back stage helping move sets, setting props, working flys and helping actors with costume changes. This is a great way to see a show from another perspective by helping it run smooth, look good, and have a blast along the way! Set Construction: Volunteers build, cover and repair the scenery. Set construction includes a wide variety of construction techniques and materials such as wood, metal, foam, plastic and fabric. Projects in the scene shop depend on the degree of experience of the volunteer. Scene Painting: Painting techniques such as rag rolling, dry brushing and sponging are used for certain effects including but not limited to brick, stone, marble, plaster, stucco, foliage, wallpaper or a variety of wood grains. Properties Coordinator: The properties, or "Props" are the variety of set dressings used in a production. Examples include, books, housewares and/or food and beverage items. The properties coordinator collects or constructs props during a shows rehearsal period and attends tech week rehearsals to ensure all the props are ready for the performance fun. Strike Force Crew: Volunteers work to deconstruct the set on the Sunday following the final performance of each production. Ranging between two to four hours, some volunteers will use power tools, while others will support the clearing of props and furniture. Tidying the backstage wings is also a part of the process. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, please contact Jason Smith at Jason@TopekaCivicTheatre.com.
