Who We Are

The Changing Our Culture of Property Maintenance Initiative is a five-year plan, created by the Topeka City Council’s Public Health and Safety Committee. The initiative is a collective effort by City of Topeka departments, the Topeka City Council, and the community to improve property condition, reduce substandard housing, motivate property owners to care for their properties, and encourage investment in vacant and deteriorated properties.

What We Do

An additional component to the Changing Our Culture of Property Maintenance Initiative focuses on neighbors helping neighbors through volunteerism.

Volunteers will assist individuals who are unable to pay for mowing services, or those who live outside of Neighborhood Improvement Association (NIA) areas in the City of Topeka limits, who need their lawn mowed.

Individuals, families, businesses, churches, organizations, and any neighbor wanting to get engaged with helping residents with mowing can sign up to volunteer through this portal.

*This portal is intended to be used by the volunteer, not the individual requesting a volunteer mow their lawn.*

Request a volunteer

Individuals who are unable to pay for mowing services, or those who live outside of NIA areas in the City of Topeka limits, are able to request their lawn be mowed.

The City, however, cannot guarantee a volunteer match, and is not responsible for vetting volunteers.

To request a volunteer, call the Changing Our Culture of Property Maintenance assistance line at 785-368-9530.

Celebration

At the conclusion of the 2023 mowing season, there will be an event to celebrate those who volunteered to mow through the United Way’s Topeka Volunteers portal, as well as others who helped in any way to make the initiative successful.

Stay tuned for additional details about the celebration.
