Who We Are

Audio-Reader is an audio information service for individuals who are blind and print-disabled in Kansas and western Missouri. We have approximately 6,000 listeners who hear newspapers, magazines and books via closed circuit radios, the telephone, Alexa and the internet. The service is provided to our listeners free of charge. All of our recording is done by our volunteers.  We also describe live theatre and tend a Sensory Garden.

What We Do

Mission Statement:
The Audio-Reader Network fosters independence by providing access to information and the arts for people who have difficulty reading standard print due to vision loss, physical or learning disability, mobility challenges, and age.

History:
Audio-Reader went on the air October 11, 1971, becoming the second radio reading service in the world. It was founded by Lawrence philanthropist Petey Cerf. The service started in the Sudler House on the KU campus with just 80 hours of programming each week. We now broadcast from the Baehr Audio-Reader Center, 1120 W. 11th Street, 24-hours a day, 7 days a week via the web, radio, telephone and Alexa devices.
