Breakthrough House, Inc.

Breakthrough House, Inc. (BTH)  is a 501(c)3 non-profit that has been helping individuals with severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI) for 40 years.  We are not a medical or clinical agency.  We have no case managers or therapists, but we provide for the other needs of our consumers through our three programs:  The Clubhouse, Residential Living Program and a Representative Payee Program.  Our staff are dedicated and hard-working group of individuals from various backgrounds, and different educational levels. No staff person is licensed in mental healthcare, so we work very closely as a team with Valeo Behavioral Healthcare, and other licensed professionals, to provide the best support possible for each of our consumers.  We all have an inner caring and drive to help support our consumers as best we can. Many of us have been with BTH for over ten years. Most have at least three years of experience. All are consumer-oriented. We work as a team towards our mission. Together, we are Breakthrough House.

Our mission is to empower our mental health consumers to live successful and impactful lives. We provide support through three programs: The BTH Clubhouse is a day program that provides activities, a daily meal, a chance to get out of one's home and make friends with others, and a place to discover inner talents, interests and strengths that can be used to improve self-esteem, self-confidence and independence.  The BTH Residential Program includes two State of Kansas-licensed group homes, and several individual apartments, all in Topeka. The group home setting provides a home-y, but structured setting with all meals provided.  Medication intake is monitored by staff to ensure regular compliance, which helps continue a resident's stability, and therefore; continued growth and success.  There are weekly chores assigned to each resident to help instill responsibility and provide a sense of ownership in their home.  Residence are also transported to the BTH Clubhouse each day.  The BTH Payee Program works through the authorization of the Social Security Administration to manage a consumer's SSDI and/or SSI benefits, ensuring rent, utilities, Rx/Med co-pays and other important bills are paid, while helping the consumer to learn to budget their money - while providing a weekly spending amount. In all Programs, we support their journey through life. We promote their independence and ability to do for self. We listen. We care. We gently guide. We rejoice in our consumers' successes, and help them get through life's bumps in the road. We try to fill in the cracks of need where the medical and clinical leaves off. We try to help our consumer's feel a little better about themselves every day.
