The KU Center for Community Outreach (CCO) announced today that Derreck Kayongo will serve as the keynote speaker for the Into the Streets Week Program scheduled April 8-14. Kayongo will speak on Thursday, April 9th at 7 p.m. in the Kansas Union Ballroom.
Kayongo is founder of the Global Soap Project, a program which takes donated, melted, purified and reprocessed hotel soap and redistributes it to vulnerable populations around the world. Currently, the Global Soap Project produces 30,000 bars of soap per week, with capacity to produce over a million bars annually. The project has donated over half a million bars of soap to over 20 countries, including Afghanistan, Iraq, Swaziland, Kenya, Ghana, Uganda, Haiti, and Malawi.
Kayongo has been recognized as a 2011 CNN HERO, has won the Maxx Entrepreneurship Award, has received the Refugee Services Award, has been honored by Congressman John Lewis with a Certificate of Congressional Recognition, and has been featured in more than 20 news stories, including stories on CNN and Fox News.
