Description

To volunteer as an Adult Literacy Tutor an Individual must first complete a two-day, 14-hour tutor training workshop to be certified as a tutor for the Topeka Literacy Council and ProLiteracy (our national affiliate). Workshops are on two consecutive Saturdays from 9 am to 4:45 pm each day. Workshops are held twice a year, once in the spring and again in the fall. There is a minimal charge for materials, but this change may be waived for individuals who can't afford to pay. No spacial training or teaching experience is required, only the ability to read and write in English is needed.

Once certified, the tutor is placed on a list of available tutors and subsequently matched with a student (client) based on the schedules of the tutor and student and on any preference that each may have.

Once matched with a student, the tutor works one-to-one with the student to help them improve their reading and writing skills. It is recommended that the tutor meet with their student twice a week for one hour each time. The tutor and student are each asked to make a one-year commitment to tutoring once they are matched. Tutoring normally takes place in a public location such as the public library. The tutor is expected to report on the progress of their student on a monthly basis.

Volunteers will be placed on the TLC workshop notification list to be notified of workshops six to ten weeks before the start of the workshop.
