Family Promise of Lawrence (FPL) is looking for Family Support Volunteers.
This role provides a welcoming presence at Mt. Hope Shelter during evening and weekend hours. This role ensures that families and volunteers arriving at the shelter are greeted with dignity, volunteers are confirmed as scheduled, and supported in accessing staff or on-call coverage when urgent issues arise. By maintaining a consistent presence in the intake office, volunteers help preserve staff capacity while ensuring families feel safe and supported.
Time Commitment:
This is a weekly or bi-weekly volunteer commitment. We ask volunteers to sign up for 2-4 hour shifts.
Shift Schedule:
Weekend shifts: 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Holidays as needed
Cover the intake office during scheduled shifts.
Welcome families
Welcome volunteers and confirm they are scheduled to be at the shelter.
Communicate with on-call staff in cases of urgent issues or emergencies.
Keep the intake office tidy and ready for staff use
Assist with cleaning as needed (e.g. kitchen)
Engage with infants, toddlers, children, and teens on the playground and other public spaces at Mount Hope Shelter (we serve families with children under 18)
Volunteers should not provide transportation, give gifts, or exchange personal contact information with families
All interactions should prioritize safety, dignity, and respect for family privacy
