One-Time Home Clean Up Project for Long-Term Topeka Resident
We are looking for at least 6 volunteers for a 4 hour cleaning shift. Because of the nature of the project, we recommend volunteers who are comfortable with physical labor and can bring a non-judgmental, supportive attitude toward a neighbor in crisis.
A Topeka resident, who is currently living in a home under a condemnation order, has been approved for the City of Topeka’s HUD DREAMS program. This program will fully fund and facilitate the repair of her water pipes, installation of a new furnace and water heater, and repair of all drain lines. This work will restore the home to a habitable status.
The Barrier: Before the city’s contractors can begin this life-changing work, the interior of the home must be cleared of high-density clutter (hoarding) to allow access to the utilities.
The Project:
- What: A "Blitz Cleanup" to clear access paths and work zones.
- Goal: To enable the HUD DREAMS program to begin utility restoration immediately.
- Impact: Your group’s labor is the final "key" to getting this resident back into a safe, heated, and plumbed home.
There is a large dumpster on site to assist with debris clean up. The goal is a targeted access clearing to allow repairmen to safely reach the basement water pipes and the bathroom. This is not a full-house clean out.
The Ask:
We are looking for 10-15 volunteers to sign up to help with this work. After we have reached target sign up numbers, United Way of Kaw Valley (UWKV) and SENT Topeka will reach out for your availability. The first date & time frame that at least 6 interested volunteers are available for will be scheduled so that the City can begin work as soon as possible.
If you are signing up a team of at least 3 people, please email Monroe Hanson mhanson@uwkawvalley.org and Eric Culbertson eculbertson@senttopeka.com with your team's availability as soon as you sign up.
Due to the hoarding environment and potential sanitation issues, this volunteer opportunity is best suited to adults 18+ who can navigate a confined and cluttered space, and who can bring a non-judgmental and kind attitude.
Thank you for your willingness to help a neighbor in need!
